Established in 1985, China Optometric & Optical Association (COOA) is a national association with over 1,000 member companies composed of manufacturers, optometrists, traders, research institutes and education institutions of the industry. It is the only legal entity representing the Chinese optical industry. There are 7 standing committees affiliated to COOA: the Spectacle Frames Committee, the Spectacle Lens Committee, the Contact Lens Committee, the Equipment and Instruments Committee, the Optometry Committee, the Quality Control Committee and the Science Education Committee who carry out related professional activities with the trust of COOA. COOA has also set up her own publication house, China Glasses Science-Technology Publisher, publishing the "China Glasses Science-Technology Magazine" for the optical industry.
      COOA is the official association in charge of the management of the China's optical industry, entrusted by the government with 3 major roles:
      1. To serve the industry;
      2. To discipline, coordinate and supervise the entire optical industry, and to defend the legal rights of the enterprises;
      3. Assist the Government to enhance the administration of the optical industry.
      The specific functions of COOA include: investigation the business of optical trade, implementing development plan of the optical industry and raising policy proposals to the government; undertaking government appointment for compiling statistics of the optical industry, participating in quality control and inspection of production, organizing technical and occupational training, working with related authorities to implement and revise the national and industrial standards of the industry, issuing the production and business licenses, examining occupational qualifications, assisting in markets exploration, organizing exhibitions, helping enterprises to manufacture quality products, reflecting requests of the industry as well as the members, coordination the relationship of the members, regulating the performance of the industry and assuring fair competition among the enterprises and the industry.
